About us
Reel Science Coalition (RSC) is a young, vibrant, and upcoming non-profit organization in South Africa, established in 2019, to form a bridge between academia, the government, and the public to raise awareness and boost the conservation and management of marine biodiversity in southern Africa.
Objectives
Develop, implement, and manage projects relating to the wildlife conservation of biodiversity (ecological, biological, genetic, phenotypic and species) and protection of the marine environment – with particular focus to marine protected areas and coastal nature reserves.
Communicate the latest advances in marine conservation science to help improve the ways in which we look after our oceans and coastline through academic publications, conferences, and scientific outreach.
Engage with local divers, anglers and stakeholders about animal behaviour and local conservation practices or indigenous knowledge, and involve them in collecting ecological data and biopsies for lab analysis (citizen science).
Provide policy makers with the scientific information needed to best manage the environment and species, and advocating this in the policy process through government liaison, press and media.
Our focus
Presently, there are two focal units at RSC:
The Division of Marine Research (MarRes), led by the Founding Director, Dr Michelle Soekoe, with focus on the marine and estuarine realms.
The Division of Wildlife Research & Conservation (WildResCoo, say wild rescue), led by Director Prof Simo Maduna, with focus extending into the freshwater and terrestrial realms.
